Tax Day 2025
The federal tax deadline is April 15, 2025. This year, the IRS will allow taxpayers in areas affected by Hurricane Helene to file federal tax returns until May 1, 2025.
The deadline to receive W-2, 1099, and other forms is January 31, 2025.
When Does Tax Season Begin?
If you are well-organized, you may consider filing taxes before Tax Day in 2025. The IRS begins accepting 2024 tax returns in January 2025. Filing early can have several advantages:
Get Your Refund Sooner
Filing your taxes early means you’re one of the first in line for processing, which can help you receive any refund owed to you sooner. For those counting on a tax refund, filing promptly may possibly provide a welcome financial boost.
Reduce the Probability in Risk of Identity Theft
Filing early can also reduce the probability in risk of tax-related identity theft. Submitting your return before scammers might have a chance to file in your name is one way which may help protect your personal information.
Have More Time to Resolve Any Potential Issues
By filing ahead of the deadline, you allow yourself more time to address any questions or issues that may arise, such as verifying deductions or addressing missing documents.
Can I Request an Extension?
Yes. If you need more time to prepare or pay your 2024 taxes, you have a few options. An extension allows taxpayers to file taxes without penalties until October 15, 2025.
Automatic extensions are available to the following taxpayers:
- Military personnel stationed abroad or serving in a combat zone
- Citizens or resident aliens living outside of the United States
- Those living in federally declared disaster areas
Taxpayers who do not meet the above criteria can still receive an extension. There are three methods of getting a tax extension:
- IRS Free File: Eligible taxpayers can use IRS Free File to complete Form 4868 for an extension, pushing the filing deadline to October, though payment of any taxes owed is still due by April 15.
- Pay Online: Select the extension option when paying taxes online through the IRS, which simplifies the process and provides a confirmation number without a separate form.
- File Form 4868: Download Form 4868 and submit it by mail, online, or with a tax professional, ensuring any estimated taxes owed are accounted for on the form.
IRS Refund Schedule
Tax returns filed electronically generally result in faster refunds. If there are no mistakes or issues, taxpayers can expect refunds within 21 days of filing online, on average. For paper tax returns, refunds can take up to eight weeks.
