Safe Harbor 401k Limits for 2024

Safe Harbor 401(k) plans allow every employee to save for retirement. For that reason, they are often used as incentives to attract and retain talent. Like traditional employee-sponsored 401(k)s, there are annual contribution limits on these retirement savings vehicles. These limits are generally updated from year to year to account for inflation.

Find out the new Safe Harbor contribution limits for 2024 to maximize your savings and move one step closer to your retirement goals. For more guidance on planning for retirement, contact an EP Wealth advisor near you.

How Much Can I Contribute to My Safe Harbor 401(k) in 2024?

Safe Harbor 401(k) contribution limits are the same as traditional 401(k)s. For 2024, these limits have been updated to reflect high inflation.

The annual employee contribution limit in 2024 is $23,000, which is up $500 from last year. The annual 401(k) catch-up contribution limit for employees ages 50 and up remains unchanged at $7,500.

The annual combined limit for employer-employee contributions for defined contribution plans increased from $66,000 to $69,000 in 2024.

Unlike traditional 401(k) plans, employer contributions to Safe Harbor 401(k)s are not only mandatory but they are also immediately vested. That means employees are not required to work a certain number of years before they can access these funds.
